USA COACH HOSTS AT TABLES DAY

Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, Donnie Harbert is in his 33rd year in rugby. He began playing in the US Army at Fort Carson, Colorado before ascending to selection for All-Army and Combined Armed Forces sides before completing his service. After the Army, Donnie played for the Colorado Springs Grizzlies before moving up to join the Gentlemen of Aspen from 1998 through to 2001, a stretch when the Gents won three US National Championships and a Super League Championship. It was during this time that he played alongside former Luctonian Andrew Davies, who recently brought two Canadian touring sides to Lucs.

When his playing days ended he immediately began a coaching career and has been a head coach for 20 of his 22 coaching seasons and is currently so for the United States Coast Guard Women, who compete in US Armed Forces Rugby.

In 2023 Donnie was, along with Andrew Davies, a guest of our very own Huw Davies (Andrew’s father) at the Hinckley tables day. He so much bonded with our club that he swore to book a table of his own this season, and he did just that for last Saturday’s Past Player’s Day.

With Donnie specially flying over from The States, we just couldn’t let his visit go unreported. Huw introduced him to the 180 guest diners, not counting those on their feet, and presented him with a Lucs 75th Anniversary Tie. We have a sneaking suspicion that he might just be back again next year. It would be a bond well made.
